immediately go into safety mode like that sounds to me like it is picking up normal, higher output combustion and percieving it as knock. For it to switch over into the safety maps because of detonation takes quite a bit more than what you described, unless the knock maps aren't tuned properly.. It is an issue I have seen before on the dyno way back when I first started doing this stuff and tuning cars... Timing would get pulled quite a bit for no reason whatsoever... Found that the higher power output was being detected as knock (because of the circuit's design as a threshold sensing circuit rather than a discrete sensing circuit) and it required modification of the knock control mappings to control timing retard. *shrug* I guess its call it a budget ecu for a reason.... he may as well just leave the low octane mappings the same if he doesn't know how to set this up..
